...to play (cram?) 2 DBS seasons in a calendar year?
I have no strong opinion on the subject, but have thought for a while that it would be 'nice' to play two complete DBS seasons in a calendar year, and hold the draft on fixed dates year-in, year-out (say on or around January 1 and July 4).
So, what would it take?
Well the regular season roughly runs 171 days now, assuming no physical days are used on all-star break (i.e. the game gives all teams 3 days rest, but we play the game after the all star break the actual day following the game before the break).
If we play a game a day (i.e. 7 games per week) like we have been doing, that would be 23 weeks for the regular season. But, were we to play an extra game on Saturday and Sunday, that would cut the season down to 19 weeks. Assuming that...
Regular season: 19 weeks X 2 = 38 weeks
World Series: 1.5 weeks X 2 = 3 weeks
End of season to draft: 3 weeks X 2 = 6 weeks
Draft to start of season: 2.5 weeks X 2 = 5 weeks
38 + 3 + 6 + 5 = 52 weeks.
Although I like the idea of 2 seasons in a calendar year, there are problems:
#1 - Running 2 games on Saturday and on Sunday is a bit much to ask of Mike. Game write-ups take more time than running the game, to say nothing of updating the website. And it presumes no days off, ever, for Mike.
#2 - Inadequate time to prepare for draft. 3 weeks seems a little short to me. A month to prepare for the draft seems about right to me.
#3 - Inadequate time to submit rosters and start season. This probably should be listed as problem #2 instead of #3. Assuming everyone submits rosters 2 weeks after the draft, this only gives a few days to enter the data into the computer. Alternatively, I doubt if everyone can submit rosters a week after the draft so the data can be entered in a more reasonable amount of time. And this says nothing about updating the website or doing the annual predictions, etc.
It seems to me 2 seasons a year is just out of reach, but I'd like to hear other people's opinions on the subject...
